Video Improves Google Page Ranking – FACT

After a hard week of adding content, supporting clients and working on a number of yet (unpaying) projects I settled down to watch some football on Friday evening as the Perth Glory looked to extend their unbeaten run by defeating local (is 2000 kms local ? – it is when you live in Perth I guess) rivals Adelaide United.

Halfway through the match I received a phonecall from my business partner Geoff Payne. Whilst Geoff had some great news for me he also wanted to berate me about some exceptionally effective but really annoying ’search engine optimization’ I had unknowingly done recently that was effecting one of his personal client’s websites.

It doesn’t sound so good initially when your business partner is calling you to tell you that you have usurped his client’s rankings and Geoff, let me tell you, is good at SEO.

Now, I have to explain that the keywords we are talking about here are very specific. The company is called Foresight Security and the website URL is www.foresight-security.com.

As the owner of this website I would expect to rank number 1, especially on a phrase matched search.

The facts, however, show otherwise….

Foresight Security Video Gets No1 Ranking In Google

Foresight Security Video Gets No1 Ranking In Google

So what could I be doing to get the best rankings for this keyword search ?

Well, if you look at the screen capture above it should become pretty obvious. It’s video isn’t it !

Geoff had referred David Turner, the owner of Foresight Security, to me to add professional introductory videos to various sections of his website.

We produced some stunning high definition videos with a super introduction and David speaking on the topic he is most passionate about (security of course).

These were uploaded to Vimeo and, of course, Geoff embedded them back into David’s website.

Of course, as part of the natural scheme of things and as an adjunct to the service I offer my video clients, I placed copies of the videos on my website as well. They were also placed on the website of Geoff and my new project Onlineassist4u – check it out.

This provides another opportunity for the client to reach a new audience and, of course, another backlink to their website. It also allows me to showcase work I am very proud of.

So, at the end of the day, what is the lesson to be learnt here. Repeat after me kiddies – VIDEO RANKS HIGH IN GOOGLE – even if it isn’t on YouTube.

And, if like David, you are prepared to spend a few dollars (and it was real small business pricing here I assure you – low three figure sum) on getting your video professionally produced and hosted then you will get multi-level benefits from it – even some you didn’t expect.

The ‘offending’ videos…..

Keyword Research

What Are Keywords – Why Are They So Important ?

Keywords are simply the terms that a potential customer enters into Google Bing or other search engines to find web pages that may meet their requirements.

That is why they are important – because if your customer cannot find your website they will not visit itand keywords are the KEY that brings them to your website.

If I am looking to buy a new watch online I might enter ‘watch’ or, if I am looking for a bargain I might type in ‘low cost watch’. These search terms are called keywords and someone who is trying to sell watches online or who is trying to attract me to their shop should be trying to get ranked number 1 on Google or Bing for these keyword search terms.

How Do You Get To Number 1 Position on Google or Bing for One or More Keywords

Depending upon which way you look at it, getting to the number one position on Google or Bing can be either very difficult, quite difficult, extremely difficult or damn near impossible.

Let’s look at the easiest way first because that is the way we all want to go isn’t it ?

In general, the longer and more specific the keyword you optimize your website or a particular page on your website for the easier it is to get to the number 1 position on Google. For example, if I was to optimize my website for the keyword ‘OVMwebbuilder builds great websites’ then the chances are that no one else’s website is going to be optimized for that keyword because it is peculiar to my business. So I should be able to get the number one position.

Well, that is great to be number one on Google BUT if no one ever searches for the keyword term ‘OVMwebbuilder builds great websites’ then I am never going to get any traffic to my website via this search.

My number one position means diddly squat if it delivers no traffic to my website (NOTE – watch out for scammers selling you the fact that they can get your website to the number one position on Google – this is the trick they use).

Why Not Optimize Your Website for a Generic Keyword ?

So, let’s go the other way and say that if we optimize our website for the keyword ‘web developer’ then there will be many people searching the Internet using that keyword.

In fact, that is true, however, the keyword ‘web developer’ is so generic that many other web developers will have optimized their websites for this keyword.

For a small business this means that I will be coming head to head with much larger competitors with much bigger marketing budgets, probably far older websites and usually a large number of backlinks, many of them quality backlinks.

The number one position for my business for the generic keyword ‘web developer’ would therefore be extremely difficult to secure.

So we cannot go for the most generic keyword because it will be too competitive and if we make our keyword very specific then we run the risk of not getting any traffic searching for that keyword.

So what is the best keyword strategy for small business owners ?

The Best Keyword Strategy for Small Business Owners

For a small business keyword research is essential - if you are not prepared to do your own keyword research or have it done for you by a professional then do not waste your time and money putting up a website because it will be next to useless.

Our goal is to identify perhaps 6 keywords for a new website that provide us with a reasonable amount of potential traffic, however, are not monopolized by the stronger of our competitors such that we can get onto the front page of Google if we optimize our web pages for these keywords.

The art of selecting these keywords is a specialist task. It requires knowledge and access to the right tools.

At OVMwebbuilder we have the skills and the tools to select the right keywords and we will provide you with the raw data that we use in our decision making process so you can understand the process and use this knowledge to add your own new keywords to your website as you grow your business and add new content to your site.

Contact OVMwebbuilder for more information about the importance of keywords and how you can get the best ones for your website.

The Magic Funnel Effect

Plenty has been written on the magic formula to gain financial success via the Internet. There has also been plenty of money made out of various schemes over the years telling you how to get rich quick online and there continues to be serious amounts of cash spent on finding ‘that one special process which, if followed, can deliver your personal freedom’.

Well schemes that suggest you can get rich quick by following a certain scheme are there for one reason and one reason only ! To make you part with your hard earned cash to make the person selling the scheme rich.

Now this is not to say that plenty of people have not made very large amounts of money indeed from selling products and promoting their business on the Internet.

Some still do but you have never heard of most of them because they just quietly go about their business making money from what they have always done and refining their systems and strategies to make sure they continue to deliver as the Internet landscape changes.

It is also true to say that it is far more difficult to make money via the Internet than it was 3, 4, 5 years and more ago. The rules have been tightened and many of the simple tactics that worked in those days will quickly get you a Google slap today.

Bring traffic to your site and convert it to $$$

Bring traffic to your site and convert it to $$$

So is there any chance of getting a lead on the competition and turning the Internet into a new or improved source of revenue for your business ?

Fortunately the answer to that questions is a resounding ‘yes’, however, you must go about it in a much more systematic manner.

There are a few basic steps that, when taken in order, give your business the best chance of making it online. And, the best thing is, so few people even take the first of these steps so just by applying what you will learn in this article you will already be quite a ways ahead of your competition.

Market Research – Keyword Research

What do we mean when we mention the term ‘market research’ in relation to the Internet ?

Well it is similar to what you would do when setting up a business with a physical location.

Before we decide on a physical location we want to analyse the area around our business to ensure that the people thereabouts have some interest in our product.

We also need to make sure that there are sufficient people living in the vicinity of our business to get sufficient paying customers through the door to gain sufficient sales to pay our bills and make a profit.

We also want to make sure that there are few if any capable competitors in the area that will take business away from us or, at worst, make us share too much of the pie.

We also want to make sure that our shop front is located in a prominent position so we gain sales from passing trade.

Keyword Research is the way we do this for our online business.

So what is a keyword ?

A keyword is a phrase that your potential client enters into a search engine (Google, Bing or others) to find what they are looking for.

If I am looking for an electric power drill in my local area I might enter the term ‘electric drill’. In this case the term ‘electric drill’ is a keyword.

A keyword can be one word or a whole series of words. Keywords of three words or more are often called ‘long tail keywords’.

How do we use keywords to get traffic to our website ?

If my website ranks in first position in my region for the term ‘electric drill’ then studies suggest that at least 42% of the people searching for the term ‘electric drill’ will click on the link to my website in Google.

If my website is any good at all in closing business then there is no doubt I will make quite a few sales from those 42% of people coming to my website.

The fact is though that competition to get first place for the keyword ‘electric drill’ in my region is going to be very fierce indeed and as a small business there is very little likelihood that I will get that position.

So I need to box a bit smarter and do some keyword research.

So what is keyword research and how can it help me ?

Keyword research is the process of finding keywords that possess the following qualities:-

  • best describe our product or service
  • would likely be entered into Google by potential customers looking for products and / or services such as those we provide
  • have a good quantity of people keying them into Google each day on average (the number for ‘good’ depends upon our business)
  • don’t have too many big and capable competitors competing for the keyword

If we can find up to 10 keywords for our business that meet the above criteria and we optimize our website for them ( see our article on Search Engine Optimization ) then we will likely get quite a bit more traffic to our website.

So how do we do keyword research ?

There are a number of free and commercial tools available to help us with our keyword research.

Google itself has a free keyword research too called, surprisingly enough, the Google Keyword Tool.

Commercial tools are also provided by Market Samurai (the one we use here at OVMwebbuilder) and a number of other companies.

Additionally, some companies, including OVMwebbuilder, offer keyword research as a service as part of the web solution development process and as a Search Engine Optimization ( SEO ) service for clients who already have a website.

That is the end of our first article on the Magic Funnel Effect, in the next one we will be exploring Search Engine Optimisation.
